I’m sure you’ve been told you can do and be whatever you put your mind to.  Too many people do not reach their full potential, and in large part this is due to a lack of knowing exactly what they want and how to set goals.  Many people don’t even understand the power of setting goals.

My daughter is headed off to college this fall.  While I know she will want to find her own way, I am going to sit down with her and share some things I’ve learned and equally as important some things I’ve realized about her.

1)  I am going to encourage her to sit down and write down a minimum of three short-term goals and three long-term goals

2)  I am going to have her list the steps she needs to complete those goals and then she can check them off and add new goal and steps as she progresses.

3)  I have made some observations these last two years regarding her working personality.  I plan to share those with her and encourage her to do some job shadowing.

a)  She does not want to spend her life shuffling papers behind a desk

b)  Family is important, so why head for a career that will demand her whole life?

c)  Her working environment is important to her.  By that, I mean, she doesn’t have any patience for unprofessional behavior in the work place.

d)  She wants to help people, but be RESPECTED and  paid well for her skills and knowledge…………… why go into teaching, unless it is at a collegiate or professional level?

Hopefully, she will listen, act on what I will suggest regarding goal setting, and then do some research for herself, constantly improving her skills and moving ever closer to the thing that will enrich her life!

I don’t know what’s in store for my daughter’s future, but what about you?  If you want to start you own Internet business, sit down and figure out your personal dreams and goals.  Carve out a plan for your life!  Set some goals and refer to them often, see how much you can grow !

  1. Hey Brenda,
Goal setting is very important and the sooner we can teach this to our children the better. I know you will have a great talk with your daughter and I’m sure she will listen attentively to your advice. Do you realize how many adults never set goals? I am looking forward to surpassing mine and I know it will happen if I am willing to put forth the effort. You’re a good mom and your children are fortunate to have you in their lives.

  2. Hello Brenda,

Goals are extremely important in all walks of life. Though many people do move forward without them, most significant accomplishments are made after goals are set, evaluated, adjusted as needed to keep a focused direction. This is especially true when you have a lot of freedom in your daily activities (such as home business or being a college student (nice analogy!). Nice insight …..

P.S. - Congrats to your daughter :) … Here are some thoughts on three short term goals for the beginning college student!

    1. Attend all classes you are registered for!; 2. Stay awake during the classes and take great notes!; 3. Don’t wait for the night before the exam to study! (Must be the college professor in me that brought those out ;)

  3. My daughter will start college in the fall as well. You have outlined a great plan in regard to goal setting and overall planning for your daughter’s future. I think I will borrow this from you!

I have been introduced to all sorts of ways to set goals and get motivated for business. They all have great intentions. It is in the ‘action’ where the real power lies.

  4. Hi 5 Folks - as we all know who work the internet - there are some excellent Inspirational Goal Quotes to be had simply by doing a search for them - every so often I do this and then print these goal terms out and dot them about my work station you would be supprised how this simple task can enhance your day

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.

  5. Hey Brenda, I hope your daughter takes your advice, or at listens to it. My boys are realising now that sometimes what I have to say is actually of importance and can be helpful - not just nagging!!

Goal setting is really important, even my 16yr old can see that with regards to subjects for school and planning now where he wants to be when school finishes. I know one thing, he doesn’t want to work permanently in fast food chains or at supermarkets, this definitely helps him see the bigger picture for his future.

  6. Goals are important. They are the genesis or the starting point. It is not likely we will get to the end point without defining that point through written goals. I heard it said that we have two choices in life; to set and achieve our own written goals or work to achieve other people’s written goals. Only a small percentage of people use goal setting in life. Only a small percentage of people are successful in life. These two small groups of people are one in the same. Thanks for a great post!

  7. Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the great comments. Jim, we’ve been working on your goals since…. forever!! We have a program available here called “concurrent enrollment”. Basically a high school student who can meet the requirements of attending the university, may take some classes, so we’ve taken advantage of that. I think this gives them a little better handle on expectations, etc. It’s been great for us anyway. The advice is great !!
